Two such individuals who have contributed to society are Al Gore and Mother Teresa.
Al Gore: Proactive Person
Leader. Humanitarian. Citizen of the world, and for the world. Albert Arnold Gore Jr. (March 31st, 1948) is driven to re-sanctify our Earth. He is a former politician and journalist, 45th vice president under Bill Clinton, recipient of the Global Environmental Citizen Award, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize shared by Rajendra K. Pachauri (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Al Gore has helped to reorganize humanity’s agenda and has called for making a commitment to the future as our number one priority. Gore’s environmentalism establishes clear intentions to reestablish the balance of Earth and raises awareness about reigniting our lost connection to the world.
Gore’s book, Earth in the Balance (1992) echoed a planetary petition to focus on our everyday choices, which pose a threat to the security of all inhabitants. Ignoring the signs and imminent warnings of our current danger of global warming only entrenches the flawed belief that the consequences of our actions are inconsequential.
In 2006, showcased in the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” Al Gore illustrated the afflictions of poverty, HIV-AIDS, and hunger in connection with the global warming crisis. The burning of fossil fuels, coal, gas and oil, and the cutting down of forests increases the level of carbon dioxide, and breaches the atmosphere’s capacity. The temperatures dramatically increase, overheat the planet’s surface, and the earth becomes uninhabitable. He outlined the necessary measures that must be taken to counteract the inevitable devastation of our world, but it is up to us to transform these thoughts into everyday practice. It’s a matter of reforming our thoughts and adopting a behavior anchored in conservancy, moderation, and utmost respect for the sanctity of life.
But how do we revolutionize our thoughts that govern our very behavior? It’s a matter of reforming our medium of discourse whereby, according to his book The Assault on Reason (2007), the Internet offers hope for global community and may be the only source for which reason and open communication can be pursued. It is a network based on opinions and ideas—volunteered by average individuals. It is the only current space in which true democratic discourse may be conducted without the interference of an entertainment directed, political-fear instilling media we are faced with today.
Al Gore has taken the unique initiative and shifted the global warming crisis away from the political stage and into the humanitarian forum where all individuals may get involved in solving this crisis. It is a forum where the public may meaningfully interact in pursuit of the truth. A forum of flourishing ideas and spirit aimed at re-establishing the deeply rooted connection and responsibility we have to Mother Earth.
A problem arises when we choose to do nothing. A solution is born when we realize that we are the producers of the problem. We are also the solution.
